Floss Like a Boss

FullSizeRender (2)Americans are in a sticky situation when it comes to their dental health. Studies have shown that a whopping average between 70-80% of Americans do not floss their teeth regularly. Why though? Most patients who come into Gulfside Dental don’t truly realize the importance of flossing on a daily basis. They think that brushing alone will reach all surfaces of their teeth and keep them clean, but this simply isn’t true.

Aside from removing pesky popcorn kernels and left-over steak, flossing between all of your teeth removes any plaque, acid and other germs left behind. This can be done with either traditional floss or with a water pik. Without being too aggressive, traditional floss glides between teeth and essentially scrubs the in-between and hard-to-reach places that your tooth-brush does not and cannot reach. A water pik basically does the same trick, except it uses a flush of water to get the job done for those who may not be able to use traditional floss (i.e. those who have a dental bridge, etc.).

Our seasoned doctors here at Gulfside Dental recommend all patients floss everyday, twice a day, with regular brushing. This will ensure that any excess bacteria, acid, or left-on food will be removed, thus helping to prevent any further cavities.

If you or anyone you know is in need of any kind of dental work or assistance, please do not hesitate to call any of our local Gulfside Dental offices. Our staff will be more than happy to get you set up for your next visit!

Summer Cleanings, Had Me a Blast!

summer has arrived

Why is it that routine seems to go out the window for summer? Sure, we all know it’s a great feeling to be able to throw that alarm clock out the window for the majority of your break, but that doesn’t mean your dental check-ups should be forgotten about as well!

We all make schedules for our vacations, so our routine check-ups shouldn’t be compromised. Not forgetting to get regular cleanings at Gulfside Dental can have its benefits.

Scheduling your child’s check-up during the school year can be a hassle. Trying to maneuver around work schedules, school times and activities, sports and all that good stuff can make it difficult to squeeze in the time for a visit with one of our doctors at Gulfside Dental. With school being out, a large chunk of that extra blocked-out time gets removed, making it easier to get the kiddos in for their exam. Also, the office’s schedule can typically be busier in the evenings on week days during school time because everyone wants to come in during those post-school hours. That can sometimes lead to longer wait times and less availability for quick scheduling. Now that the kids aren’t in school, their days are more open to be able to come in.

Keeping them on-track also keeps them in the mindset of having great oral hygiene and keeping a structured schedule, even through the chaotic summer. Gulfside Dental’s office staff works diligently to ensure each patient is scheduled for their next appointment and gives reminder calls to make it easier to remember.

Cleanings in general are a great way to remove excess bacteria and decay from your child’s mouth, which in turn helps with their overall health. This means that your child will be more likely to be free of sickness during the summer and the beginning of the new school year. The check-up is also a precautionary avenue to prevent any cavities or other treatment in the future. Prevention is key!

Another, more cosmetic upside to keeping up with your routine check-ups is being able to have fresh, clean teeth in those summer vacation photos, or your child’s back-to-school photos.

Any one of our superb dentists or hygienists at Gulfside Dental can get you and your family in for your routine check-ups and cleanings. Whether you are a new or existing patient, call any one of our conveniently-located offices to schedule!

Beastly Breath

bad-breathWhew! Ever found yourself in need of a mint, some gum, or some mouth wash because of breath that could peel the paint off the walls? You’re not alone! An estimated 50% of the United States population suffers from bad breath. There are several factors that can affect breath and cause it to be less than pleasant, and no, it’s not just onions!

Diet, medications, tobacco products, dry mouth, bacteria, and decay can all cause your breath to go sour. Luckily, there are ways of treating bad breath.

For tobacco users, the best solution would be to discontinue use of the tobacco. Not only does it induce horrific breath, but it’s terrible for your overall health and the health of those around you.

Seeing one of our Gulfside Dental doctors can help with bacteria and decay-caused halitosis (chronic bad breath). They can assist you  in getting your teeth and mouth cleaned and can perform any treatment needed, all with terrific pricing!

As far as dry mouth and medications giving you problems, this can typically be fixed with another prescribed medication from your doctor.

If your diet is the culprit, then laying off of certain foods can help minimize the after-effects. Foods like onions and garlic and spices tend to linger. Brushing, flossing, and using mouth wash after eating can help the smell as well.

If your occasional or chronic bad breath is making you self-conscious or concerned, it’s always best to come see us at Gulfside Dental. You won’t regret it, and your breath will thank you!
